The coordination of those things happens in the ears and right between them (in your brain). How trumpet valves workĮvery note you play requires coordination of which valves are down and what is going on with your body. When number 3 valve is pressed the pitch is lowered one and a half tones (3 semitones). When number 2 valve is pressed the pitch is lowered half a tone (1 semitone). When number 1 valve is pressed the pitch is lowered one whole tone (2 semitones). The valves help you to fill the notes between the open notes by lowering the pitch of each open note. To make the trumpet fully chromatic, you will need to use the valves. With just the open notes, you are limited in what you can play. This is due to each valve having a different length of tubing. The trumpet has 3 valves that alter the pitch within a harmonic series of the instrument.
